Fantastic elite athlete success summer 2024! – including Olympic Bronze for Alex Haydock-Wilson!
As it did in 2022 and 2023, the club has enjoyed a strong season in team competitions. This year, we finished 5th in the National Athletic League to secure our place in the highest level of club athletics, 2nd in the Southern League, 3rd in the Youth Development League Upper and 2nd in the Youth Development League Lower.

In addition to the team success and following in the footsteps of famous past members, such as Sir Mo Farah, Bev Kinch, Keith Connor, Lawrence Clarke, Mark Hylton, Mark Richardson, Nicola Sanders, Paula Fudge, Shirley Thomas and Wendy Sly MBE, it has been a great season for our elite athletes.
At the UK Athletics Championships on 29th and 30th June, there were 20 WSEH athletes competing after achieving the qualifying standards!
We have two National Champions! and four other medallists!
- Morgan Lake – High Jump champion
- Jake Norris – Hammer champion
- Jessie Knight – Silver in 400m hurdles
- Temi Ojora – Silver in Triple Jump
- Jordan Aki-Sawyerr – Bronze in Triple Jump (and a new PB)
- Alex Haydock-Wilson – Bronze in 400m
At the English Schools National Championships on 12th /13th July, we had 37 athletes qualify and compete!
We had a great medal haul, six bronze, one silver and two golds!
Under 20 women
- Ella Davey – 1500m steeplechase – Gold (after Gold last year in under 17 girls)
- Jacqueline Heller – 1500m steeplechase – Bronze
- Mia Woodley – triple jump – Bronze
- Hannah Lewington – javelin – Bronze
Under 17 women
- Lucy Wilkinson – 3000m – Bronze (and a new PB)
- Maria McMullan – triple jump – Bronze
Under 20 men
- Demari Gumbs – 400m – Silver (and heat winner)
Under 17 men
- Leon Francis – 200m – Bronze (and a new PB when winning his heat)
- Tobenna Okoro – 400m – Gold (and a new PB) (after Gold last year in 300m in under 15 Boys)
Three of our athletes were subsequently selected for England in the Schools International match a week later in Glasgow – and all of them won medals!
Under 17 women
- Lucy Wilkinson – 3000m – Silver (and another new PB)
Under 17 men
- Tobenna Okoro – 400m – Silver (and another new PB)
- Leon Francis – 200m – Bronze
Staying with Juniors, Ava John (Heptathlon) was selected for the GB team for the European Athletics U18 Championships in Slovakia in July, her first international recognition! (see here). See here for Ava’s story.
In Seniors, we had five athletes selected for the GB team for the European Athletics Championships in June:
- Jessie Knight – 400m hurdles
- Morgan Lake – High Jump
- Jake Norris – Hammer
- Tade Ojora – 110m hurdles

At the England Athletics Under 20 and Senior National Championships in Birmingham in July:
- Blake Moore won the senior men’s 5000m
- Tyri Donovan won the senior men’s 400m hurdles
- Orla Brennan won the u23 400m hurdles
- Alex Barbour won the senior women’s 3000m steeplechase
- Teddy Gannon won silver in the u20 men’s discus
- Demari Gumbs won bronze in the u20 men’s 400m
- Ella Davey won bronze in the u20 women’s steeplechase
- Jodie Smith won bronze in the senior women’s long jump
- Mia Woodley won bronze in the u20 women’s long jump
The club are immensely proud of all these athletes and congratulate them on these achievements. We look forward to more athletes going on to achieve such heights in the future.
