Steeplechase Success for WSEH AC Athletes
A number of WSEH Steeplechasers coached by Shireen Higgins have achieved some notable results in recent weeks.
On 20th June 2021 Alex Barbour was 2nd in the England U23 Championships 3,000m Steeplechase held at the Bedford International Stadium.
Not long afterwards, on 10th July 2021, WSEH athletes took 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in the Intermediate Girls’ 1,500m Steeplechase and a 1st and 5th in the Intermediate Boys’ event at the English Schools Athletics Championships.
In the Intermediate Girls’ race, Rachel Clutterbuck (competing for Surrey Schools and currently topping the UK rankings), took 1st place, followed by Freya Ruffels and Jess Hatch both representing Berkshire Schools. Jess was rewarded with a pb by over 14 seconds (5:07.45) which moves her up to 3rd in the UK rankings behind Rachel and Freya. As a result, Rachel and Freya have been selected to represent England Schools at the Schools Home International event to be held in Derby on Saturday 25th September 2021.
Luke Birdseye won the Intermediate Boys’ race by over 11 seconds with a new 8 second pb of 4:26.24 which puts him clearly at the top of the UK rankings for his age group and also gained him selection for the Schools Home International in September. Joshua Mingoia, competing in his 1st full track season was 5th in the same race.
